A. 주어 + be동사

주어와 동사

문장 (A는 B이다 또는 B하다) 에서 A 에 해당하는 말이 주어이고, B 에 해당하는 말이 동사입니다. 즉, 동사는 동작(eat-먹다, play-놀다)과 상태 (be-~이다. have- 가지고 있다. feel-느끼다)를 나타내는 말이며, 주어는 이러한 동작이나 상태의 주체를 말합니다.

Be 동사

'우리 말로 ~이다. ~입니다.' 에 해당하는 말로, 영어에서는 ‘am,’ ‘are,’ ‘is’ 를 be동사라고 부릅니다. be동사의 의미는 수학에서의 “=”과 같다고 할 수 있습니다.

I am a student. (나는 학생입니다.) ⇒ I = student (나 = 학생)
You are a student. (당신은 학생입니다. ⇒ You = student ( 너 = 학생)
He is a student. (그는 학생입니다.) ⇒ He = student (그 = 학생)

위 예문에서 알수 있듯이, 우리 말로는 ‘~입니다.’로 주어에 관계없이 똑같이 사용하는데 반해, 영어에서는 주어가 무엇이냐에 따라 ‘am’, ‘are,’ ‘is,’를 다르게 사용합니다.

It 는 한 마리의 동물이나 한개의 사물을 대신하는 대명사입니다. 따라서 be동사 다음에는 한 마리의 동물이나 한 개의 사물을 나타내는 명사 (a dog, a desk)가 옵니다.

We, You, They 는 두 사람 이상을 대신하는 대명사입니다. 따라서 be동사 다음에 두 사람 이상 을 나타내는 명사 (students)가 옵니다. You는 한 사람과 두 사람 이상을 대신하기도 합니다.

We are [ You are / They are ] students.

We're [ You're / They're ] students.

We are not [ You are not / They are not ] students.

We aren't [ You aren't / They aren't ] students.

They는 위의 문장에서 보는 것 처럼 두 사람 이상을 대신하기도 하지만, 두 마리 이상의 동물이나 두개 이상의 사물을 대신하는 대명사이기도 합니다. 따라서 be동사 다음에는 두 마리 이상의 동물들이나 두 개 이상의 사물들을 나타내는 명사 (dogs, desks)가 옵니다.

He, She, It, They 이외에도, be동사로 is와 are를 쓰는 것들은 아래 표와 같습니다.

is를 쓰는 경우 : 주어가 3인칭 단수
are를 쓰는 경우 : 주어가 3인칭 복수

3인칭 단수, 3인칭 복수

I (나) 를 1인칭이라 하고, you (너) 를 2인칭이라 하며, 그 외 He, She, It, They (그, 그녀, 그것, 그들/ 그것들) 등을 3인칭이라고 합니다. 그 중에서 He, She, It, This, That, Mary, Seoul 등을 3인칭 단수라 하고, They, These, Those, Mary and Jane, Seoul and New York 등을 3인칭 복수라 합니다. 다시 말씀드리지만 이러한 용어는 서로 의사소통을 원활히 하기 위해 이해만 하면 되지 암기할 필요는 없습니다.
 

명사와 대명사

생물이나 무생물의 이름을 나타내는 말을 '명사'라고 한다고 말씀드렸습니다. 대명사는 이러한 명사를 대신하여 쓰는 말입니다.
